A 5-day Jaisalmer Jodhpur trip covers Jaisalmer Fort, the Sam Sand Dunes with one night in a desert camp, and Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. Jodhpur to Jaisalmer is about 282 km and takes 4 to 5 hours by road. The best time to go is October to March.

If you want to see the golden desert and the blue city of Rajasthan in one trip, a Jaisalmer Jodhpur itinerary of 5 days is one of the best ways to do it. In five days you can walk through a living sandstone fort, watch the sun set over the Sam Sand Dunes, sleep in a desert camp, and finish with the mighty ramparts of Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur.

This guide gives you a realistic day-by-day plan, travel times, where to stay, when to go, what it costs, and a few tips we share with our own travelers. If you would rather skip the planning, you can also look at our ready-made Jaisalmer Sam Jodhpur tour package, which follows the same route.

Why Combine Jaisalmer and Jodhpur?

Jaisalmer and Jodhpur are only about 280 km apart, yet they feel completely different.

  • Jaisalmer is the “Golden City.” Its yellow sandstone fort, carved havelis, and nearby dunes give you the classic Thar Desert experience.
  • Jodhpur is the “Blue City.” Its massive fort, palaces, and blue-painted old town give you Rajasthan’s royal side.

Together they make a compact trip: desert and adventure in the first half, royal history and shopping in the second. Because the drive is straightforward, five days is enough without feeling rushed.

Day 1: Jodhpur to Jaisalmer

Start from Jodhpur airport or railway station and head west toward Jaisalmer. The drive is roughly 282 km and takes 4 to 5 hours with a tea or lunch stop. The landscape slowly changes from farmland to open scrub and sand, and it is the first sign that you are entering the Thar Desert.

After you check in, keep the day light. Take a slow evening walk around the fort area and try local snacks such as pyaaz kachori or dal baati churma. Go to bed early, since Day 2 is full.

Tip: Leave Jodhpur by 8 or 9 AM so you reach Jaisalmer before sunset and can see the fort glowing in golden light.

Day 2: Jaisalmer Fort, Havelis and Sam Sand Dunes

This is the heart of the trip.

Morning: Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort was built in the 12th century and is one of the few “living forts” in India, with homes, shops, guesthouses, and temples inside its walls. It is part of the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Spend about two hours exploring the lanes, the Jain temples, and the palace area, and look out from the ramparts over the city.

Late morning: Havelis

Walk to Patwon Ki Haveli, a cluster of ornately carved mansions, and Nathmal Ki Haveli, known for its fine stone craftsmanship. They show how rich the old trading families of Jaisalmer once were.

Afternoon: Gadisar Lake

Gadisar Lake is a peaceful stop with small shrines and stone arches around the water. It is a good place to rest before the dunes.

Evening: Sam Sand Dunes

Drive about 40 to 45 km to Sam Sand Dunes, which takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour. Check in to your desert camp, then head out for a camel safari as the sun gets low. The dunes turn gold and then orange, and the heat of the day fades fast.

After sunset, most camps arrange a cultural programme with Rajasthani folk music and dance, followed by dinner. Afterward, walk a short distance from the lights and look up. On a clear night, the number of stars is hard to believe.

Tip: Carry a light jacket from November to February. Desert nights get cold quickly, even when the day was warm.

Day 3: Sunrise in the Desert and Drive to Jodhpur

Wake up early. The dunes are quiet at sunrise, and the light is soft and beautiful for photos. Have breakfast at the camp, check out, and start the drive to Jodhpur. Plan for about 5 to 6 hours with breaks.

Check in at your hotel in the afternoon and rest. In the evening, take a relaxed walk or an auto ride through the old city to get your first look at the blue houses.

Day 4: Jodhpur Sightseeing

Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort sits on a rocky hill high above the city and is one of the most impressive forts in India. Rao Jodha founded Jodhpur in 1459, and the fort has stood over the city ever since. Inside, the museum shows royal palanquins, weapons, costumes, and painted halls. From the ramparts, you can see the old blue town spread out below.

Give it at least two to three hours. Audio guides are available and worth it.

Jaswant Thada

Nearby, Jaswant Thada is a white marble memorial with delicate stonework. It is calm and peaceful, and it looks especially lovely in the afternoon light.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

Drive past Umaid Bhawan Palace, an grand 20th-century palace. Part of it is a luxury hotel and part is a museum. Even from outside, it is worth a photo stop.

Evening: Clock Tower and Sardar Market

Finish at Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) and the surrounding Sardar Market. It is a busy, colorful market where you can buy spices, textiles, handicrafts, and Rajasthani sweets such as mawa kachori.

Day 5: Departure from Jodhpur

After breakfast, head to the Jodhpur airport or railway station. If your flight or train is in the evening, you can use the morning for an extra stop such as Mandore Garden or a last bit of shopping.

Where to Stay

You can match this trip to almost any budget.

  • Budget: Simple, clean hotels and basic desert camps in Jaisalmer, Sam, and Jodhpur.
  • Standard: Heritage-style havelis in Jaisalmer and comfortable camps with attached bathrooms at Sam.
  • Deluxe: Palace-style hotels and Swiss-tent camps with better rooms, food, and evening programmes.
  • Premium: Luxury resorts and high-end tented camps with the best service and amenities.

At Sam, camp quality varies a lot. Check what is included (dinner, cultural programme, safari), the tent type, and bathroom facilities before booking.

Best Time for a Jaisalmer Jodhpur Trip

The best season is October to March. Days are pleasant (roughly 10°C to 27°C), evenings are cool, and the dunes are at their most comfortable. December and January are the busiest months, so book hotels and camps early, and expect higher prices. The Jaisalmer Desert Festival usually takes place around February. If you want to attend, confirm the dates for that year and book well ahead.

From April to June it gets very hot, especially in the afternoon. You can still travel, but plan sightseeing for early morning and late evening.

How Much Does a 5-Day Jaisalmer Jodhpur Trip Cost?

The cost depends on your hotel category, group size, season, and what is included. A few things change the price the most:

  • Hotel and camp category (budget to premium)
  • Number of travelers (more people share vehicle cost)
  • Season (peak December and January vs. summer)
  • Inclusions such as meals, safari, and guide

Our package starts from ₹17,880 per person, and the final price depends on the options above. Entry fees, guide charges, and personal expenses are usually extra. For a quote based on your dates, see the 5 days 4 nights Jaisalmer Jodhpur tour package.

Sam Sand Dunes vs Khuri: Which Should You Choose?

Many travellers ask this.

  • Sam Sand Dunes is closer, larger, and more developed, with many camps and lively evening shows. It suits first-time visitors, families, and groups.
  • Khuri is farther out, quieter, and less crowded. It often appeals to couples and repeat visitors who want a calmer desert experience.

For a first trip, Sam is the easy and popular choice. If you prefer peace over entertainment, ask your travel planner to arrange Khuri.

Practical Tips for Your Trip

  1. Book camps early in winter, especially for the weekends, New Year, and festival dates.
  2. Dress in layers. Warm clothes are a must for desert nights from November to February.
  3. Carry sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for daytime sightseeing.
  4. Wear comfortable shoes. Forts involve a lot of walking and stairs.
  5. Keep some cash for small purchases, tips, and local markets.
  6. Bargain politely in markets, and check prices at fixed-price shops first.
  7. Respect local customs. Dress modestly at temples, and ask before photographing people.
  8. Drink plenty of water, particularly in warmer months.
  9. Confirm what is included in your camp (safari type, dinner, programme) before you go.
  10. Do not rush. If you have time, add an extra night in Jaisalmer, which many travelers say was worth it.

Is 5 Days Enough for Jaisalmer and Jodhpur?

Yes, for most first-time travelers. Five days lets you see the highlights of both cities and enjoy a proper night in the desert. If you like a slower pace, or want to include Khuri, Kuldhara, or Bada Bagh, add one more night in Jaisalmer. If you want a longer Rajasthan trip, you can extend to Udaipur or Jaipur, and you can explore more options on our Rajasthan tour packages page.

Why Combine Jaisalmer and Jodhpur?

Jaisalmer and Jodhpur make a good pair because one gives you the desert and the other gives you royal history, and they are only about 280 km apart.

  • Jaisalmer, the “Golden City,” has a yellow sandstone fort, carved havelis, and the dunes nearby.
  • Jodhpur, the “Blue City,” has a massive hilltop fort, palaces, and a blue-painted old town.

The first half of the trip is desert and adventure, and the second half is heritage and shopping. The drive is simple, so five days is enough without feeling rushed.
